The Zand developers try to port over new features from GZDoom, but it's a slow process and they're pretty behind. Multiplayer has simply not been as popular to make maps for as single player, so submissions for match, CTF, circuit, etc often ended up with no maps to compete. Zandronum split off from ZDoom a long time ago (back when it was still Skulltag, I believe) and implemented its own C/S netcode, which is why it works better. The problem is that GZDoom is Peer-to-Peer instead of Client/Server, so desyncs are common and things like prediction don't work so well because of the deterministic nature of the playsim. GZDoom already has multiplayer, including Co-Op.
